GIBSON Update: Yesterday, July 27th, GIBSON was scheduled for his third Chemo Therapy treatment. Due to a low Platelat count, his treatments have had to be rescheduled sometime in the next 7-10 days. Platelats are irregularly shaped, colorless bodies that are present in blood. Their sticky surface lets them, along with other substances, form clots to stop bleeding. Low Platelats are a pretty common side-effect when giving the Chemo Drug-Carboplatin. His platelat level IS back on the rise & returning to a good count, as we speak! Other than that GIB is in great spirits and an amazingly strong Boy. He did some therapy-dog work yesterday & went out to do fun things like getting his favorite strawberry & milkbone doggy ice creamish/yogurt treat, made especially by Lazy-Dog Ice Cream Co. (Thanks Bob & Deb). He loves going along so I can do my errands and shopping. He is an instant attraction to ALL who see him. So he gets LOTS of pets and attention from kids from 1 to 101! I am very proud announce that GIBSON has been nominated as a finalist in the AKC “Ace” Awards. (You can see his certificate on this website) Winner will be announced in August. (also go to www.akc.org for more info on these prestigious awards.) YES- I am a PROUD Mom………….(“Good-Boy” GIB!!) Also, we are speaking with a Canine Cancer Organization called PINK PAWS for LIFE, and getting involved in speaking out & addressing, specifically, Canine Bone Cancer. (We lost another friend in New Jersey this week, “SAMMI” who’s Mom, Jan & Family, are holding strong, in the loss of SAMMI’s fight with Cancer. ) I hear from people EVERYDAY who are watching their canine-kids fight this horrible disease. GIB & I are bringing an awareness to canine cancer, and this drive will only get bigger & better in the upcoming months! More Later ….. But for now, Warmest Wags – Sandy & GIB^..^

RE: GIBSON Health Update/July 17, 2009 – - – GIB & I apologize for not keeping up on his Health Updates during his battle with Cancer. We will try to be more frequent with new postings. We want to thank ALL OF YOU for writing in with your emails, and wanting to know how the Big-Guy is doing. GIBSON had his 2nd Chemo Therapy Treatment almost 2 weeks ago. The 1st week was mighty challenging after treatment and the 2nd week has brought on the need for Vet Appointments & New meds regarding Upper GI Antibiotics/treatment. His appetite has been a great issue from bringing him home after surgery. It IS getting better, but still not where I would like to see it. GIBSON is a very special spirit to many, and he is quite unique! As his Oncologist has stated, “HE IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL DOG!” So with this brings “Not So Typical Issues.” Mostly … Well, how can I say, “There is a very definite Mental Component,” that has to be addressed…DAILY! If GIBSON isn’t doing what he is used to be doing, he pouts/He is an incessant talker (Rrrr-rrrrr-rrrrrrruv – Ohhhhhhhh – Rrrrrrrrr-rrrr – Gutteral Grunting and so on……..) So he lets you know what he is thinking a lot! What GIB is used to is getting into his Van and going & seeing his patients/clients/adoring people who Love -Pet – Adore & Feed him Yummy Treats. (Incessantly!) “What a Job-But somebody has to do it…” So We have been trying to keep up a little better with this in between “Health Issues.”(Both His & Mine.) He is such a Happy Guy when He is Making Smiles happen to All He meets. Also, after an outing like this – his appetite improves, he sleeps better & Mental component=SOLVED! For about the last week it has been 100 degrees + up here in the Mountains of the Sierra Mountain Range. (That is really some kind’a Mountain HOT when it gets to 100 up here.) But all 5 of my Dane Kids are kept in Air Conditioning with Fans going to keep them cool & Hydrating these big droolers takes on a whole new meaning! GIBSON has 2 more Chemo treatments. 1 in another week and his last treatment is on August 17th. We have had some interesting projects come our way and hope to be up & out & healthy around the last week of August/1st week of September. Until then… Thanks for all the phone calls & emails & well wishes from ALL. As GIBSON always says, “I Rrrrrrrrr-rrrrruv You!!!” Sandy & “G”

GIBSON & Sandy want to thank everybody for their support in GIB’s Battle with OsteoSarcoma. He has always been a special Boy & Now, He is even more special! He is adjusting to being a “Tri-Pawd” at an amazing rate. He had a little infection last weekend, but antibiotics were started, and he is making great strides. He starts his first round of chemo therapy this week and we will keep you updated on how that goes. He will have only a few rounds at a very low dosage each time. Dogs do very well with chemo unlike people, who require larger doses at a more frequent rate. Much Thanks to our K9 Grass Family & ALL OF YOU who have sent support & Prayers! We Love You All & will be back soon speaking out on this defining moment in our lives. We want to make this into a teaching opportunity for others to learn about, and not feel like they are all alone in this Caner Fight For Life! “Wellness” is our theme!!

Gibson in Texas at “Unleashed”

11:00 am    to    5:00 pm

GIBSON will be in Texas at The World’s Largest Pet Facility under roof. The event is called “UNLEASHED”. Here’s how they describe their indoor dog parks (they do a better job than I can!).

Unleashed Indoor Dog ParksT, the nation’s first and only indoor, off-leash play park for dogs and their owners, announces the March grand opening of its flagship facility in Dallas, offering dog owners an entirely new way to play with their pets. Unleashed IDP was created to give dog owners a place to hang out with their dogs in a comfortable off-leash environment that’s available year-round.

Located on 6.5 acres just four minutes from downtown Dallas, this 50,000 square foot, one-of-a-kind facility offers 25,000 square feet of indoor parks, 2.5 acres of exterior parks with water features, a full dog supply store, café, grooming salon, dog daycare and lounge areas.

Unleashed IDP is a dedicated, full-time play space where dogs and their owners come to play off-leash seven days a week from early morning to late evening.
The concept was born when co-founders Cody & Kelly Acree witnessed first hand the demand for dog-related services while using a local municipal off-leash park. On good-weather days, hundreds of dogs plus their owners were coming and going each hour to play off leash in the park. Yet rainy days and extreme temperatures made the park virtually unusable for much of the year.

The Acrees then developed a concept facility that built upon the off-leash play park and added all the things municipal parks are missing – a clean, fresh-smelling environment, seating, restrooms, refreshments and ample drinking water for the dogs – and brought it into a climate controlled environment that’s available no matter the weather. The addition of a full dog supply center, café, grooming and dog daycare, and lounge areas where owners can hang out with their dogs help create a full-service facility where both owners’ and dogs’ needs are met.
“Unleashed is defining the next evolution in the pet services industry,”
said Cody Acree, co-founder. “The first facility of its kind anywhere, Unleashed sets the bar for dog-owner play spaces around the country.”

The Unleashed concept exemplifies the humanization of pets trend.
Approximately 63% of U.S. households own pets, up from 56% in 1988, with 40% owning dogs, or more than 65 million households with 75 million dogs. 44% of pet owning households own at least two pets. Not only are dogs the most commonly owned pet in the U.S., but dog owners tend to be highly committed as evidenced by an average pet ownership period of 19 years. Not only is dog ownership steadily growing, but owners are increasingly willing to spend on their pets much as they would children.
The parental relationship was exemplified by an American Demographics magazine survey, which found that 83% of pet owners refer to themselves as “Mom” or “Dad.” According to the Pet Products Manufacturers Association, three-quarters of dog owners consider their pet as a child or equal family member. With pet owners’ desire to enrich the lives of their pets they are allocating a larger portion of monthly budgets to premium food, services, toys, and nutritional supplements.

“Unleashed is as much about the owners as it is about the dogs,” says co-founder Kelly Acree. “Sure, its great exercise and socialization for the dogs, but its also a comfortable, fun place for the owners to hang out and mingle with like-minded people, and maybe meet someone new.”

Unleashed has found support from animal advocacy organizations, such as the SPCA. “We’re very excited to see this concept come to life,” said Gina Parker, Vice President, Community and Corporate Affairs. “Unleashed is providing dog owners a place to bond with their pets and is reinforcing responsible pet ownership. What an amazing thing to have the first Unleashed facility here in Dallas.”
